Seeing Change: Get churches talking about money this Lent

Tom Newbold photo cropCTC has been at the forefront of the Church’s fight for economic justice. The Church Credit Champions Network is part of CTC’s effort to engage churches will the difficult issues of money and debt. Tom Newbold is the CCCN coordinator for the Diocese of London. Here he talks about our Seeing Change course, an exciting resource to get churches talking about money. Why not use it this coming Lent?

“We’ve not yet reached Christmas, but with only three months to go, have you thought about your Lent course? The Seeing Change course has been developed to resource and equip churches to get thinking and talking about some difficult, but significant biblical topics: lending, credit, and debt.

The course is five sessions long and explores what the Bible has to say about money, connecting it to the experiences of people today. It uses the book of Nehemiah and draws parallels between Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem and our attempt to rebuild our communities today.

The Rt Revd Adrian Newman, Bishop of Stepney, supports the Seeing Change course. Here he shares…

“Everywhere I go I find churches wanting to engage with the scandal of high-cost loans and inadequate access to affordable credit for the vulnerable and marginalised, but so often Christians don’t know where to begin.  The Seeing Change course, produced as part of the Church Credit Champions Network, is an excellent resource to get people started and to help mobilise a compassionate and thoughtful response at a local level.  It’s relevant, engaging, and free!  I hope that many churches will use it for their Lent courses next year, and that it will be part of a rising tide lifting our Christian response to issues of credit and debt.”

Seeing Change is free to download here. We have produced accompanying films to introduce the themes and topics throughout the course, and an easy-to-use leader’s guide to enable you to run it successfully. The course is designed as engaging, interactive and straightforward, and is ideal for use in small groups, Bible studies or in your Sunday congregations.

Following the course, you may wish to hold a Money Talk. A Money Talk is a fantastic opportunity to inspire and engage your whole congregation on issues around money; over 50 churches across London have already held a Money Talk. Get in touch if you’d like a CCCN coordinator to deliver a Money Talk at your church, dates are limited!”

We’d love to hear from you. If you have any questions about the Seeing Change course, or would like to get in touch with a CCCN coordinator, let us know at hello@theology-centre.org
