The year is well underway, and although it is cold outside, our minds are turning to the summer. Already it is mid January so our Urban Leadership School is firmly focused on planning this year’s Summer Internship. Details of the programme are now available and once again we are making contact with our wider networks, clergy in East London and beyond and university theology departments. Applications are already coming in, so once again, we are in for an exciting summer.

Last year we welcomed 17 interns to our summer programme which was the largest number yet. Most were from London and universities scattered around the UK, but there was one intern from Germany and another from Ghana.

This year we hope at least 25 young adults will join us for an exciting month of Community Organising training and church placements. We are targeting our publicity to young adults from London congregations, particularly those from Black Pentecostal churches and those in congregations which are already members of Citizens UK – but anyone is welcome to apply. Already we have applications from undergraduates attracted by the rich mix of theological reflection and very practical action. There is no doubt our interns will be a very diverse bunch – but they will all be passionate about their faith and social action.

We also experimented last year with a development programme. Each Wednesday we held a Bible study, and in the middle week of the internship we hosted a seminar day which explored social action within Ignatian Spirituality and Christian community living. We hope to build on this programme this summer so that the whole experience for the interns is rich and where teaching and prayer links with their Community Organising experience. We are so pleased that, once again, our Chaplain Sister Josephine will have input into our programme. Every year interns tell us how much they valued meeting one-to-one with Sister Josephine and her spiritual reflections.

We would love for churches and individuals within our network to help us identify the right interns for this coming summer. Maybe there are people in your congregation or members of your extended family who might be just right for our Summer Internship. Perhaps they are frustrated with ‘things’ as they are, and maybe they are seeking ways to be active in their faith. We welcome applications from those over 19 year of age and from any Christian denomination. Look out for our programme information on our website and get in touch with Selina or Tim Clapton at CTC for further information.
